HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TYPE

HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR SKIN TYPE

SKIN TYPE is a classification describing your genetic skin attributes.

Skin type is based primarily on how much oil is produced in the follicles from the sebaceous (oil) glands, and on the amount of lipids (fats or fat-like substances) found between the cells.

Skin type is determined by genetics and ethnicity, but it can change over time and with age.

Generally speaking, skin becomes drier with age, because our cellular metabolism and oil production slow down as we get older.

ALL SKIN TYPES NEED PROPER:

  • CLEANSING
  • EXFOLIATING
  • HYDRATING
  • MOISTURIZING and
  • PROTECTING

THE MAIN 4 SKIN TYPES ARE:

  • DRY
  • NORMAL
  • COMBINATION
  • OILY

DRY SKIN CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Minimal oil production
  • Very small-sized pores
  • Can feel rough, thin and/or tight

NORMAL SKIN CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Balanced oil production
  • Small pore size
  • Uniform appearance
  • Feels soft, smooth textured, has good elasticity

COMBO SKIN CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Moderate to high oil production
  • Larger pore size in the T-zone of the face than the cheeks and sides of the face
  • Feels oilier in the center T-zone than the sides of the face

OILY SKIN CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Moderate to high oil production
  • Moderate to large pore size
  • Appears shiny; comedones* and blemishes may be present
  • Feels thick and firm, potentially never due to congestion

* Comedo (plural: comedones) = mass of hardened sebum and skin cells in a hair follicle. An open comedy (blackhead) is exposed to oxygen. Closed comedy (whitehead) is blocked and does not have a follicular opening.
